Our Mission

OpenPress exists to report technology and business news our readers can trust, and to build the software we wish existed while we're at it. One newsroom, one small studio, no wall between the two beyond the one that has to be there: what we write about is never for sale, and what we build is never used to shape what we cover.

Why We Exist

Most tech coverage is written by people who've never shipped anything, and most software is built by people who never have to explain it to anyone the next morning. We wanted neither. OpenPress started as a place to publish straightforward reporting and tutorials, then grew a studio because writing about the industry every day made the gap between explaining software and building it impossible to ignore.

We're independently owned — no outside shareholders, no advertiser with a say in what we publish — because the mission only holds if nobody with money in the business can lean on the newsroom.

What We're Building Toward

  • A newsroom that's right before it's first, and says plainly what it doesn't yet know.
  • A studio that ships work it would actually use itself, not just work a client signed off on.
  • A shelf of free tools — starting with the CV Builder and File Converter — built because we needed them first, not as a lead-gen form.
  • One accountable team on both sides, reachable directly, with no hand-off between the people who write and the people who build.

How We Measure It

Not by pageviews alone. A story matters if it changes what a reader knows or does next; a tool matters if we're still using it ourselves a year after shipping it. We'd rather publish fewer stories we stand behind and ship fewer tools that actually get used than pad either count.

Where We're Headed

Still early, and building in public — see our About page for the fuller story and the timeline so far. The short version: more daily coverage, more studio work worth the studio's name, and more free tools built the same way as the first two.
