Claude AI: Anthropic’s Explosive Rise to a $965 Billion Valuation

Claude AI Anthropic company funding timeline 2026

Claude AI is one of the fastest-growing artificial intelligence products in the world, and it’s built by a company that didn’t even exist five years ago. In this post, we cover how Claude AI’s parent company Anthropic was founded, who’s behind it, and how it climbed to a valuation approaching $1 trillion in 2026. For context on how the wider AI industry is moving right now, see our coverage of the China AI model race between Alibaba and DeepSeek and our report on AI safety testing becoming a genuine safety risk across the industry.

Who Built Claude AI? Meet Anthropic

Claude AI is developed by Anthropic, an AI safety and research company founded in early 2021 by siblings Dario Amodei (CEO) and Daniela Amodei (President), along with five other former senior researchers from OpenAI: Jared Kaplan, Jack Clark, Chris Olah, Ben Mann, and Tom Brown, along with Sam McCandlish (Wikipedia).

Dario Amodei had previously led research at OpenAI, while Daniela ran safety and policy there. Anthropic itself has described its origin as a team of just seven people who moved over together at the start of 2021, working entirely over Zoom during the pandemic before eventually meeting for weekly lunches in San Francisco’s Precita Park (Anthropic — Series H announcement).

Today, the company is headquartered at 500 Howard Street in San Francisco and operates as a Public Benefit Corporation, meaning it’s legally required to weigh its public mission around AI safety alongside shareholder returns. That mission is the reason its flagship assistant is built and marketed differently from many rival chatbots — safety research sits at the center of the company’s identity, not as an add-on.

What Exactly Is Claude AI?

Claude AI is Anthropic’s family of large language models, first launched publicly in March 2023. Since then, it has gone through several major generations, each improving reasoning, coding, and safety behavior. It’s available to the public through a web and mobile chat app, through an API for developers building their own products, and through workplace tools like Claude Code, Claude for Excel, and Claude for PowerPoint. We’ve also covered how similar assistants have been targeted by bad actors in our piece on an irregular AI hack that targeted both OpenAI and Anthropic, and on fake Anthropic Mythos profiles used in a GitHub deception attempt.

A Funding History Unlike Any Other Startup

Few startups in history have raised money — or grown in valuation — as fast as Anthropic. Here’s the round-by-round breakdown:

2021 — Early Seed Funding Anthropic raised its first capital shortly after founding, largely from individual backers connected to the effective altruism community, to fund early AI safety research.

2023 — Early Institutional Backing Google became an early institutional backer, committing capital in stages as part of a long-term cloud and investment partnership.

March 2025 — $3.5 Billion Round Anthropic reached a $61.5 billion valuation after closing a $3.5 billion round led by Lightspeed Venture Partners, with Bessemer Venture Partners and Cisco Investments also participating (Seeking Alpha).

September 2025 — Series F The company closed a $13 billion Series F round at a $183 billion valuation — nearly triple its valuation from six months earlier — led by ICONIQ, with Fidelity Management & Research and Lightspeed Venture Partners co-leading (Sacra).

February 2026 — Series G It raised $30 billion in a Series G round at a $380 billion post-money valuation, led by GIC and Coatue (Sacra).

May 2026 — Series H On May 28, 2026, the company closed a $65 billion Series H round led by Altimeter Capital, Dragoneer, Greenoaks, and Sequoia Capital, valuing it at $965 billion post-money (Anthropic official announcement).

June 2026 — Confidential IPO Filing Anthropic confidentially filed for an IPO on June 1, 2026, at the $965 billion valuation, bringing its total funding raised to roughly $125–132 billion across 18+ rounds (Sacra).

Valuation Growth at a Glance

DateRoundValuation
March 2025Series E$61.5 billion
September 2025Series F$183 billion
February 2026Series G$380 billion
May 2026Series H$965 billion

That’s roughly a 15x increase in valuation in just 14 months, making it one of the fastest-scaling companies in tech history (Forbes).

Who’s Backing the Company Financially?

Growth on this scale has been fueled by an unusual dual-hyperscaler arrangement. Amazon has committed up to $33 billion in total, making it the single largest investor by committed capital, while Google has committed up to $40 billion, with $10 billion funded immediately in April 2026. Other backers include Sequoia Capital, Coatue, GIC (Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund), Fidelity, BlackRock-affiliated funds, D1 Capital Partners, and the Qatar Investment Authority.

Having both Amazon and Google as major investors means the company isn’t locked into a single cloud provider’s infrastructure, unlike some competing AI products.

How Big Is the Business Today?

By mid-2026, Anthropic had scaled into a genuine enterprise force:

  • Employees: Roughly 2,500 people worldwide
  • Revenue: Run-rate revenue crossed $47 billion by May 2026
  • Enterprise customers: 8 of the Fortune 10 companies use Claude AI, and more than 1,000 enterprises spend over $1 million a year on Anthropic’s products
  • Valuation: $965 billion, briefly the highest of any private company in the world

The company has openly said it isn’t profitable yet and doesn’t expect to be until 2028, given it’s spending close to $19 billion on training and inference compute in 2026 alone (Forbes).

Claude AI vs. ChatGPT: A Fast-Moving Rivalry

This success has put Anthropic in direct competition with OpenAI — the very company Dario and Daniela Amodei left to start their own venture in 2021. OpenAI raised $122 billion in March 2026 at an $852 billion valuation, meaning Anthropic’s $965 billion Series H briefly made it the more valuable of the two companies. Combined, the two AI labs have raised roughly $300 billion in just a few years — a scale of capital normally associated with national infrastructure, not startups.

Final Thoughts on Claude AI’s Rise

Anthropic has gone from seven researchers on a Zoom call in 2021 to a business approaching a trillion-dollar valuation and a confidential IPO filing in 2026. It’s one of the fastest wealth-creation stories in tech history. Whether that valuation holds up once public markets scrutinize the numbers is still an open question — but Claude AI has undeniably become one of the central products shaping the AI industry’s next chapter.
